A day tour at Magellan’s Cross and Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño, Cebu

Magellan’s Cross is probably the most important historical place in Cebu City. It is a symbol when Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana accepted and baptized as First Christian Filipinos together with the other 400 Filipinos in 1521 wherein Christianity began to spread here in the Philippines.

The women dressed in yellow are standing around the chapel selling their candles, saying, “magpa sinulog ka mam/sir” a traditional way of offering a prayer to the cross through a Sinulog dance. Each color of a candle has its own meaning, the first one is yellow which means for good health, blue for the travelers safe journey, red is for love, green is for success, pink for the happiness, brown for marriage & white for purity. Magellan’s Cross is in the custody of the Agustinian Priest of Basilica Minore Del Sto.Niño.

The Basilica was founded by the Spaniards headed by Fr. Andres Urdaneta on April 28, 1565. The same day of the Urdaneta and Legazpi expedition arrived in the island of Cebu. It is one of the oldest Roman Catholic church established in the Philippines. Every 3rd Sunday of January, the whole Cebu celebrated the grandest celebration of Cebuanos, the Sinulog Festival.
